FAQ

Will you mow my lawn every other week?
Turf grass should never have more than 1/3 of the blade of grass removed at any one time. Doing so causes an accumulation of longer clippings that the micro-organisms in the lawn have difficulty breaking down and is a leading cause of thatch build-up. It may come as a surprise that mowing the lawn is about more than just keeping your lawn’s height under control. If done properly mowing stimulates the grass of your lawn to lushness and better health, just as pinching a garden plant can improve its appearance. Proper mowing technique is an important aspect of overall lawn care. The more obvious result is an unattractive lawn. Since our goal is for you to have a beautiful and healthy lawn, Alternative Landscaping offers only weekly service.

Do you bag the grass or mulch it?  Mulching grass is beneficial to lawns because it provides valuable nutrients to the roots as clipping de-compose. (Bagging is like throwing away FREE fertilizer!) Alternative utilizes a method of  mulching which evenly distributes clippings and helps to minimize clumps in wet conditions.

Doesn’t mulching create thatch?
Thatch  it is not a byproduct of mulching. Thatch is a symptom of an unhealthy lawn that can be caused by many things including; over-fertilization, improper watering or removing to much of the grass blade at one time. It’s also more likely to occur in the heavy clay soil types found in St. Clair Shores, Grosse Pointe areas.

landscaping Can you de-thatch my lawn?
Although de-thatching (or “Power-Raking”) is a service we offer, it can cause stress and damage to the existing grass and is best used when over-seeding or refurbishing the lawn. The preferred option is a combination of core aeration (refer to our list of other services) and proper overall maintenance that allows the thatch to break down naturally.

What can you do if my yard is really wet?
Wet (saturated) yards can be caused by poor drainage, poor soil conditions, lack of sun or a combination of all of these. Excessive rainfall can obviously cause this problem on a temporary basis. Solutions include; re-grading of the soil, installation of underground drainage pipes (French Drain/swales/stone pit systems), soil aeration or tree pruning/removal. Short of these solutions, we take great care in trying to minimize the impact that our commercial equipment has on these areas. In spite of our best efforts, some temporary damage may be unavoidable. As always, our goal is to do whatever is necessary to keep your property looking its best and satisfy our clients.
